Canadian couple accidentally becomes customer service heroes after phone number mix-up

A British Columbia couple have been serving up extraordinary customer service after a phone number mishap connected frustrated grill owners directly to their home. Jim Klassen and Mirjana Komljenovic, a super helpful pair from Summerland, situated on the western shore of Okanagan Lake, found themselves fielding enquiries meant for Napoleon, the prominent Canadian barbecue manufacturer (Picture: CBC News)
A couple from B.C.'s Okanagan has been grilling up some well done Canadian kindness for the last few months. When barbecue season began to heat up this spring, a couple living in Summerland ? a municipality located on the west side of Okanagan Lake ? began to get calls from grillers with burning questions about their Napoleon grills. Even though they had no "steak" in the Canadian barbecue company, Jim Klassen and Mirjana Komljenovic did their best to help every single customer ? even when the callers were a bit hot headed.
The confusion began when Klassen contacted Napoleon about upgrading a component on his own grill earlier this year. Somehow, his personal number became linked to the company’s customer service system, though exactly how that happened remains something of a mystery to both the couple and the company. Gary Scott, Napoleon’s Vice President of Marketing, admits he’s baffled by the situation… (Picture: CBC News)

‘Not only is it rare to have something like this happen, but it’s rare to have a consumer who took the actions that they did,’ Scott explained. Despite Napoleon’s attempts to remove Klassen’s details from their website, search engines continued to suggest his number to customers seeking support (Picture: CBC News)

The couple began receiving calls from perplexed grill owners experiencing various barbecue-related difficulties. Rather than hanging up on confused customers, Klassen and Komljenovic embraced their unexpected role with characteristic Canadian politeness. ‘It was kind of fun… we would have these wonderful conversations,’ Komljenovic recalled (Picture: CBC News)

The volume of calls became substantial, with Klassen’s phone ringing up to twenty times daily. Customers contacted them at all hours with their grilling dilemmas, and whilst some callers were initially frustrated, the couple maintained their patient approach and were never rude or hung up. ‘It’s just not who we are,’ said Komljenovic, who runs his own maple syrup business (and, no, that’s not a joke aimed at Canadians – he really does) (Picture: CBC News)

When faced with technical questions beyond their expertise, the pair would direct callers to White’s BBQ and Fireplace Centre in Kelowna, a certified Napoleon dealer they use themselves. This arrangement worked remarkably well for everyone involved. ‘[The staff at White’s] would help out with whatever [the customers] were looking for. So it was perfect,’ Komljenovic told Canadian news network CBC (Picture: CBC News)

The conversations often expanded beyond barbecue advice into broader topics. ‘Jim just started having a good time with the people that were calling… I even got into some of them,’ Komljenovic said. Many chats evolved into discussions about weather conditions and political matters, creating genuine connections between strangers (Picture: CBC News)

After handling hundreds of misdirected calls over several months, Napoleon finally managed to prevent Klassen’s number from appearing in search results. The company has recognised the couple’s extraordinary dedication by creating a special honour specifically for them. ‘It’s a title we’ve never given it to anyone in the 50 years of our company, but we’ve created a special designation for them and, of course, we’re retiring from them from this role,’ Scott announced.
