A Near Death Experience (NDE) is where a person is pronounced as clinically dead but comes back to ‘life’ after a period of time. For Lauren Canaday, then 39, this was after 24 minutes, and she revealed everything that happened to her during that time. Studies reveal that when people face a NDE, they tend to have a positive experience – and see their life flash before their eyes, or have out-of-body experiences, or they have dreams or enter meditative states. Her heart stopped on February 7, 2023. On a Reddit AMA, she explained that she experienced a sudden cardiac arrest. She has been on medication for controlled epilepsy for years but she suffered a grand mal seizure, that causes violent muscle contractions and loss of consciousness in her home and stopped breathing. She said: ‘I went into sudden cardiac arrest at home this past February, my husband called 911 and started CPR. It took 24 minutes for EMTs to resuscitate me. After 9 days in the ICU, I was declared “cognitively intact” and have no visible brain damage on MRIs. I also have a normal EEG despite a history of seizures and status epilepticus for over 30 minutes right after resuscitation’

Her husband found her and dialed 911 before performing CPR on his wife until EMTs arrived. However, the medics managed to restore her heartbeat after using a defibrillator to shock her four times. It’s thought that complications with Covid triggered the incident. But after her experience, Lauren says that she feels like she’s been given ‘a second life’ – and described the unexpected benefits that have come with it

However, speaking to Newsweek, Lauren reveals that although she cannot recall specific visions or shapes, she describes the encounter with death with intriguing positivity. She said: ‘I have this gut feeling that it was friendly and peaceful even though I can’t report any shapes or personas or visions of that time. I feel like I dissolved, and it was just really nice.’ And despite having no clear memory of feelings or thoughts during the incident, she added: ‘What I have is a strong sensation of peace about that time when I was out of consciousness’

But after her experience, she said that she began finding joy in small moments, from taking a shower to eating a hospital cheeseburger. She said: ‘I remember a lot of very serene moments in and after the hospital, like none of the worries I used to have mattered, and I got insanely excited about things like cheeseburgers. Things just felt very simple. I feel like this is my second life. I feel like I have two birthdays’

She explained: ‘In my first life, I was very individualistic and strong. In this life, I have a completely different worldview and am comfortable—mostly—with depending on others… A lot of stuff like status and career success don’t matter beyond survival needs, creature comforts, and helping others (now).’ And in her AMA, she revealed: ‘I wasn’t religious and I’m not sure I’m religious now but I’m definitely more spiritual’
Lauren has released a memoir, called ‘Independence Ave: How Individualism Killed Me and Community Brought Me Back’ which explores how to rebuild your life after a shocking incident throws it off course. She explains that life is all about the basic priorities, including sleep, healthy eating, exercise, contemplation and relationships. ‘I try to walk 10,000 steps a day and hike once a week as far as I’m able,’ she said. ‘I take a lot of time to be quiet, including silent prayer or meditation.
